Announcing WordCamp London 2017: March 17th – 19th

We’re delighted to welcome you to the three-day production of WordCamp London 2017, this 17th – 19th March 2017 at London Metropolitan University.

We’re setting up another show-stopping event with three jam-packed days of networking, skill and knowledge sharing and contributing back to the project we all love.

The event will include a Contributor Day on Friday 17th March, and sessions and presentations over the weekend between 18th – 19th March.

You will not want to miss it!

WCDLN 2017 Event Theme

Every year WordCamp London has a unique theme inspired by the big city, and its culture, traditions and history. In the past we’ve been transport, punk and Victoriana; this year, we’re going bright-lights-big-city with a glitz and glam theatre theme.

The West End theatre district has a long history in the capital, and you’ll find references to our event theme in our designs, communications, sponsorship packages and everything else we can get our jazz hands on.

This is an excuse to be even more theatrical than usual – how could we resist?!

Join the fun: here’s what’s coming up next

We’ll be announcing all the production details over the coming months, including calls for speakers, sponsors and volunteers, as well as opening ticket sales – so please keep your eyes peeled and help us spread the good news.

  1. Hi,
Congrats to you for these new WordCamp in London.
In an other hand, I’m a little bit sad. It would be great to take a look if there is others WordCamps not so far. Bordeaux for its first edition will do it the march 18th and announce it the november 9th.
A lot of French community’s WordPress lovers will have to do a choice.
London is not so far from France and appreciated from them 😉
I understand the date is already reserved but I wanted to specify it.
I hope London WordCamp will be great as Bordeaux’s too 🙂

  2. Hi Thomas,

    Thanks for your question.

WordCamp London was originally pinned for early April like the previous years, but this would have meant clashing with Easter in London; which from experience is a bad idea. London is busy normally, but during school holidays it gets even worse.

This meant that for 2017, we pencilled in dates for the last weekend of March. This would have meant missing the Easter period in London.

Fun fact: WordCamp London happens at the London Metropolitan University which uses a room booking system that only allows any staff to book a certain amount of time in advance.

For late March, it meant that the venue team could not book the rooms we required as an event until mid-November. This has meant no contracts could be signed since the venue could not guarantee the rooms until the booking of those dates became available.

When the booking was made available, another department at the university had beaten the venue team to it and booked an university open day on the same weekend using some of the rooms we wanted. For this reason, the staff at the university offered us a weekend earlier – the 17th till 19th March.

Now we did consider doing WordCamp London with the university’s open day but it would have been a bit chaotic to say the least, especially for the venue staff there.

We also could have looked for another venue, but that involves uprooting the whole event, creating new signage maps, finding a venue that does not cost the earth in London, finding a caterer that understands complex allergies and that we trust, finding a new social venue and a new contributor day venue.

That’s a lot of work for a team, that at the time, only had 16 weeks to get the ball rolling for WordCamp London.

That’s why we decided to take the hit and move the dates a week early. We knew that other WordCamps had been planning around the event, and we knew about clashing with Bordeaux.

Hopefully next year, Easter will come early, there will be no open day to contend with and we will not have to clash with any WordCamps.

We apologise for any inconvenience the date change has caused to you or anyone else.

    1. Thanks for your full reply. I hope WordCamp London 2017 will be great.
      Good luck.
